The species name ( hudsonicus) is said to refer to the Hudson Bay region, where the type specimen was obtained.The latter two words are a reference to the squirrel using its own tail as a source of shade. The genus name ( Tamiasciurus) is derived from a combination of three Greek words: tamias (animal who caches food), skia (shadow) and oura (tail).
